Pine trees, croissants and plenty of waves
Between Bordeaux and Bilbao you have the beautiful Les Landes region of SW France, home to the epicentre of European surfing; Hossegor. Then we enter The Basque Country; an autonomous region in South West France and Northern Spain, proudly known for its picturesque mountains, incredible food, world-class cider and wine and some of the world's best kept secret surfing beaches.
The deep Bay of Biscay funnels Atlantic swells straight onto the sand banks in Bordeaux to the reef break setups around Bilbao, and everywhere in between. Combine these epic waves with the classic vibes for the region and you have a cultural surfing experience not to be missed.
Stunning coastal views, glorious weather, immaculate cycle routes through the pine tree forests running alongside beautiful beaches, backdropped by imposing mountains sum up this part of the World.
South West France is home to some of world’s most incredible beaches with a plethora of waves, suitable for all abilities.
This region is blest with a coastline that faces all directions and is made up of numerous spots breaking over a variety of reef and sand bottom setups. On our trips to SW France and the Basque Country we usually head to:
Lacanau, which boasts as consistent surf as the famous beaches further south and handles size better due to the man made jetties.
Biscarosse Plage, another popular break for Bordeaux-based surfers with a variety of waves ranging from barreling high tide shorebreaks to long low tide walls.
Mimizan Plage, a true gem as it can be as good as the breaks in Seignosse and Hossegor but is often overlooked as it is close enough for most people to go surf them instead.
Seignosse, which has a variety of waves stretching up and down the loosely designated that can be great for beginners on the right tide and swell, yet world class in differing conditions.
Hossegor; the surfing capital of Europe, with a great scene to accompany it's reputation.
San Sebastian, has Playa Zurriola is practically in San Sebastian town centre and picks up all swell going. A surf here, followed by a stroll into town for the world's best pinchos (tapas) is great experience.
Zarautz, which is huge beach with consistent, good quality, beachbreak waves that don't need much swell to work.
Playa de Karraspio in Pais Vasco is a spot close to Lekeitio that we will check. It is a sheltered beach break, which is good if you are hiding from large swell, with a variety of different waves breaking into the beautiful bay.
Mundaka is Spain's jewel of the crown, a seriously impressive left hander that is not for the faint hearted. Always worth checking out.
Sopelana is the beach closest to Bilbao and is a very consistent beachbreak with several peaks.
For our Bordeaux to Bilbao and Bordeaux to Biarrtz cycle surfari's we will be staying in comfortable camping conditions every night that will be set up upon arrival, or we will stay in classy and comfortable hostels.
